Paging Heather Locklear, "Disappointing" Ratings for Melrose Place Reboot
By Jamey Giddens on September 09, 2009

Maybe they should have blown up the building again? About as many people are still watching the soon-to-be-off-the-air CBS Daytime sudser Guiding Light, as tuned in to the CW for last night's series premiere of Melrose Place. The highly-anticipated and heavily-promoted spin off of the original FOX megahit only drew an average of 2.3 million viewers, according to Michael Ausiello. Sister soap 90210 didn't fair much better, with only 2.6 million gluttons for bad acting tuning in (See review later this afternoon).

According to TV By The Numbers, MP managed only a 1.5 share among women 18-34, the demo the original MP made Madison Avenue start paying attention to in the 90's. Something tells me all the leaks concerning uber-popular schemer Sydney Andrews Mancini (Laura Leighton) once again biting it in episode one of the new show may have kept nostalgia buffs away. At any rate, somebody better lock a deal with Heather Locklear (Get it, lock, locklear? I kill me.) fast. The late Aaron Spelling didn't call her his lucky charm for nothing!

It was a solid episode. It started off rocky but got better. I like Ella, Lauren, David, and Auggie. The show has potential. Michael is still awesome. I loved his scenes with Syd. It sucks they killed her off, so soon. However, I'm intrigued by the whole "Who Done It?" s/l. The writers can get some good mileage out of that. They better bring JB/Jane back.
It's a way better reboot than Nu90210, IMO.

At least the show wasn't bad. I actually liked it. But with the Nielsen Ratings ... it's hard to survive out there these days.
The one mistake that the CW made was maybe that they started with the 90210/Melrose Place night into the new season. They should of started with Gossip Girl/One Tree Hill again and make these two show to their second night. Let's see how The Vampire Diaries are doing on Thursday. If this show should fail too, CW has big problems....

Melrose 2.0 is way better than 90210 2.0. I really liked last night's premiere, though it does have room for improvement I will be tuning in.
I think Jonah and Ella are going to end up being my favorites, but Lauren and Violet have potential.
My lease favorite is the Riley character....she seems like a bit of a wet blanket at this point, but it is only the first episode.
I want to know why David is an art thief and boy was it great to see Michael.
The jury is still out for me on Auggie, but he has potential...
I can't wait to see how Lauren's hooker s/l plays out.
I know that this may be a bit to early in the series, but did anyone else get the impression that at some point Violet is going to have a monster mental break down? She just seems like the type.
Melrose 2.0 isn't Gossip Girl, but it should have the time to work things out and find its feet. I can't wait.

I agree, I actually liked the pilot. If that's the case with the ratings, well Heather Locklear was the main reason the original lasted as long as it did, so they do need to bring her back. I hope they bring back JB/Jane and GS/Jake back as well. I agree with you as well soapjunkie88, maybe they planned it out wrong.

Didnt watch MP.
But did watch 90210. I liked it a lot. The chick that plays Naomi still sucks but the chick that plays Annie has gotten MUCH better. I'm still disappointed that Ethan is gone cause him and Silver were hot! More drama is always good and that one episode was much better than half last season.
But that guy that plays teddy NEEDS TO GO! He looks his age which is 30!!!! 30 year old playing a 17 year old I mean come on!

90210:
When they introduced Teddy last night, my first thought was if Naomi is only going for sugar daddys this season ... and then he turns out to be a high school student? Ugh ... that Teddy has to go ASAP.
Other than that: Missed Ethan ... he and Silver had potential. But the rest I liked. Only the new Wilson house disappointed me. What happened there? How do you go from a nice mansion to this...???

I agree, soapjunkie. All of the shows should've aired the same week, with GG and OTH being first. The ratings would've been much better. I would be shocked if the Vampire Diaries end up with low ratings, as well. Considering the popularity of Twilight and True Blood. We'll see.

I watched...got a flutter seeing the old apt. complex. Then they killed off Sydney - hadnt seen the spoilers. My first reaction was WTF and then I kept waiting to find out it really wasnt her...it ruined it for me. Elle was okay, but seriously she is NO Amanda Woodward. I loved seeing Michael Mancini again..interested to see how his relationship with his son plays out...and interested in the Doctor with medical school bills. The rest for me was sort of, "eh". Will give it another epi or so to see if I get into it, mostly because I love my evil doc, but the original had some memorable characters and actors..this version is slicker, prettier if you will, but I dont see that same watercooler factor.

I agree with you both. The character of Teddy can stay. However, the actor needs to go. He looks too damn old to be in high school. I guess he's suppose to be a "Steve-type". I thought Ian Ziering looked too old, as well. However, he had charisma for days. This actor does not.
Ethan/Silver could've been this show's meal ticket. They had an "epic" feel to them. Oh well....

yep, Luke. Violet totally looks like she might go into psycho mode at any moment. Watch out Auggie!! Something tells me Ashlee Simpson will be able to pull off crazy very well. I can't wait. LOL!!

Paging Heather Locklear!!!! She saved the original, she may have to come back to save Melrose Place 2.0.

I agree with all you S/E fans. That could have been the shows epic Dylan brenda kelly triangle. Ethan finally found the girl he was hot with. And Silver found a man that liked her FOR HER! And that kiss boy it cant get any hotter than that. Silver and Dixon are played out.

Honestly, the ratings are on par for the CW.

Oh, that S/E kiss was great!!! I would rank it right up there with Logan/Veronica's first kiss.

Melrose Place is fantastic! SO much better than the crappy 90210 relaunch. I am excited for the next episode...I like the characters, the stories are interesting, and the veterans are being much better utilized than on 90210, where they were essentially window dressing. In the first two minutes of Melrose, we are instantly re-introduced to Syd and it's made known she's a central force at MP. Loved it!
By the way, these ratings aren't bad for the CW. On ABC or CBS, it would have been cancelled already.

I could give a rat's butt about either show, but is it possible that the ratings might improve next week? I think they premiered it too early. They should have waited another week like most other shows.

Standard ratings for the CW.
Begs the question why the CW didn't pick up GL?!

I thought it was pretty decent too. I mean, it's the CW, so you should really walk into it not expecting Academy Award(or even Emmy Award-)winning material. As such, I think it has the potential to be a highly potent guilty pleasure. Most of the characters are okay(agree with another poster about the walking bore that is Riley)though I really like Ella, Jonah and Lauren, probably due to the fact that Katie Cassidy, Michael Rady and Stephanie Jacobsen seem to be the stronger actors among the cast. That said, I don't think any actor or character can hold a candle to the original series' secret weapon, Marcia Cross. Heather Locklear still gets all the credit for turning the show around after the first year, but it was at it's best when Cross was front and center(and quickly fell into the ground when she left).

**Hello no Amanda on MP NO! Have y'all seen Heather Locklear's face recently?**
Thank goodness, I thought I was the only one who thought Teddy was Too old.
In real life the actor is 30. So I guess he's the Steve Sanders of this season. And Navid is the David of this season, never getting any from his girlfriend.
That dancing sequence was so awkward and horrible looking.
I actually like MP. Except Riley. That girl better have an affair or something. But so far so good.
I want to know what juice Sidney and Michael is drinking. They haven't aged since the first MP was on.

yes, yes, yes. Heather was fantastic but some of the show's best moments came from Cross.

I've gotta say, I really liked the first episode of Melrose Place. The characters I like most so far are David, Ella and Jonah. And I'll definitely keep watching, even if it turns out to be not so great. I mean, I still watch 90210 just because of Silver, Kelly and Ryan. And, to be honest, looking at David for me is enough of a reason to keep watching
. That boy looks like a young Brad Pitt with a touch of Ben MacKenzie!

You would think they wouldve added jo reynolds son reid or even had a anchor for the show i love michael and sydney but they dont have the appeal mrs locklear has

For anyone who's interested, Daphne Zuniga and Josie Bissett will return soon.
I actually prefer that this show doesn't have an "anchor" character like Annie on 90210. I love that we were thrust right into the middle of things.

I don't want to be mean or anything, but BigDede is right. Heather Locklear has lost her beauty. And I honestly don't think that she can bring better ratings. This show is running at The CW ... most of the people who are watching don't even know who Heather Locklear is. So sorry, but she isn't the big rescue everyone should waiting for.
Besides that I always thought that Marcia Cross and Laura Leighton have done more for Melrose than Heather Locklear. The real highlights were thanks to Marcia and Laura.

Amanda could never out do Marcia Cross character. Taking off that wig and showing that scar, some of the best tv ever!

I liked the first episode of MP. I can't wait to find out who really killed Sydney and find out more background on the characters especially Violet because she does seem like she'll have a breakdown. I mean the whole comment she made to the dr about them being good girls and its no fun. You know she's done something bad. My favorite characters so are Elle, David, Jonah and Auggie. I will definantly keep watching.
90210...I thought the episode was o.k. I also agree that Teddy seems to old to be in high school. I definantly see him causing trouble between Navid and Adrianna. I was disappointed that Annie is the outcast. I mean even Silver turned her back on her. I mean even Dixon doesn't believe his sister. I'm sad too that Ethan isn't coming back. I thought him and Silver had more potential than her being with Dixon.
I was laughing too during that dance sequence. it was to funny.
