I'm all for ABC cancelling Adam Lambert's appearances. I thought his AMA performance was WAY over the top and too much for a new artist. I don't want to see porn on-stage - by anyone. ESPECIALLY when I don't want my young-uns watching sex onscreen. I know that Adam has busy comparing himself to Madonna and Britney and whining about this being a double-standard. And while there is a double-standard at play here, Adam Lambert is NO Madonna or Britney. They were both well-established superstars who had already proven themselves to be fantastic dancers/performers with a SEEMINGLY spontaneous "kiss" onstage. While Lambert, on the other hand, has barely left the amateur world of AI and seems to be making over-the-top, on-stage sex antics make up for the off-key screaming he's so fond of doing.
Back when Jodeci was performing, I HATED K-Ci's sex and bird-chest offerings, but at least the dude could sing.
Back when Bobby Brown was performing, I HATED his sex offerings too, but at least he could perform.
Prince... okay... no complaints about Prince and his relationship with that guitar.
But Lambert is inconsistent and needs to prove himself as an artist first rather than an exhibitionist. If you take away the raunchy performance and look at the singing/dancing performance, he was AWFUL and unworthy of AMA, ABC or any other forum.
I dont mean this to be offensive in any way, but what are youngins doing up at 10:55. I still remember Jimmy smits showing his tush during the 10:00 hour on NYPD blue - the world didnt stop spinning over that either. Was it over the top, sure, was it worse that what we often see, no, did I think he would give a similiar performance on GMA, no (his letterman performance was very low key suitable to the forum.) I think Pure Diva has a point - that if the theatrics take away from the performance that they should be reigned in because the singing is the biggest aspect, but if appearances were canceled on every artist that ever gave a supbar performance -- well you know what I am getting at. JMHO

I agree with you i saw the show all the act's was over the top if you ask me his performance was not bad I saw worse on the show that night and i have to disagree with the above post it was not pron at all . ABC is way over the top what they are doing is not right at all and to his fans some fans needed to boy-scott ABC I think they want to hurt him.
There is one reason why they are doing this we know why but hate to say it jmo
"Young'ns" is a relative term. My kids are teenagers.
As for theatrics - usually, theatrics are used to divert attention from a lack of talent in the singing department. People who can really, really sing usually have the singing as the focal point, just as you pointed out.
Case in point: Janet Jackson. I enjoyed her shows in the beginning because they were more about her performance - the dancing and the stage show. I don't go to her shows anymore because of the simulated stage sex. And while I think the reaction to her Super Bowl nipple show was a tad over-the-top, I did not disagree with there being some type of punishment for planning that type of show in the first place. And the same way I felt about her stuff is the same way I feel about Adam Lambert's stuff. (And Janet was already a superstar herself when that happened.)
Pure Diva, I totally respect what you are saying and I admire how clearly you have made the point that for you its about excessiveness and not about the homosexual aspect. I guess I just didnt think relatively speaking that it was worse than the things your kids probably see on the internet or the lyrics that get played on the radio (I dont know how parents do it these day, my mother would have had a heartattack trying to keep me away from things)
From a boycot perspective I just would hold that ABC should be consistent. If they are going to pull an invite from Adam Lambert then they should pull invites for all the suggestive performers, or better yet they should have created standards BEFORE the acts were booked.
It is my understanding that the producers of AMA and other big award shows monitor the rehearsals, reserving the right to veto "objectionable" performances. The word-on-the-street is that the AMA producers did greenlight the Lambert performance in rehearsal, but that he changed and added the over-the-top stuff to the live performance without their knowledge.
If that's true, do you think that would have given the network grounds to boycott him?
I agree with remark made by Adam. He is a performer not a babysitter. If parents don't want kids watching they should Tivo first. If you believe your teenagers aren't seeing this stuff is movies you need to wake up. I am 66 years old and have raised 3 boys. Where there is a will, there is a way. I think in his excitement he got carried away and was a bit over the top with the oral sex act but believe me, I've seen worse out there. At least he wasn't dripping blood and shooting guns. By the way his new CD rocks. As a matter of fact Adam Lambert makes me wish I was 40 years younger, born a man and gay. How's that.
I have to agree with all those who think he went way too far. I don't believe his excuse about it all being about adrenalin, because, when he pulled at that girl's crotch, he very carefully pulled at something that he seemed to have rehearsed pulling at. I think he was trying to punch up a performance that he knew wasn't up to his usual standard, and did what he did to draw attention away from a "not very good" song. I mean, did anyone listen to his song? I really didn't find it very good at all, and before this song, I was a very huge Adam fan. All this stuff about a double standard wears a little thin, and I agree with the writer who said he isn't well established as a performer yet. Personally, I think the guy needs to be mature enough to admit he was wrong, and he owes his fans an apology. I'm sure he lost a lot of fans that night, and I'm one of them. Had he had the maturity to admit he was wrong, instead of trying to defend himself, the old adrenalin arguement would have gone over a lot better.
I didn't see Adam's performance because I don't watch the awards shows. Not the music awards, the Emmy's the Oscars, the Tony's or any other little statue giving show.
With that being said, I find Adam Lambert disgusting in general. Now that his Idol days are behind him he has turned into a flaming fairy the gay world should be ashamed of. I would't walk across the street to watch him/her perform even if it was free.
I say kudos to ABC for canceling any thing to do with this poor excuse of a ... man?
Okay just going to toss my two cents on one point you made -- "I dont mean this to be offensive in any way, but what are youngins doing up at 10:55. I still remember Jimmy smits showing his tush during the 10:00 hour on NYPD blue -"
The one thing you need to keep in mind is that it isn't 10:55 everywhere, it was 9:55, and while that may not seem like a lot for us, i think it is a big difference for kids.
Anyways I haven't watched the performance so i can't really comment on that.
On the subject of Parents should TiVo before allowing thier kids to see, That is understandable in the normal circumstances, but this wasn't like a brand new show called "Gossip Girl" or "Melrose Place" it was a music award show, most of the time parent's shouldn't have to worry about something like this happening (again i haven't seen it), and the same goes for a football game, you shouldn't have to worry about "someone being naked by the end of this song" lol.
Sure, it was over the top. But, so many performers go over the top. Adam Lambert is a stage performer and that's what he gave on stage at the AMA's. He's true to himself. He's risque. I'm sure Adam will be invited to everything again pretty soon. This is just a blip ... he established something about himself and his performances, people will find him exciting. He made a name for himself with that performance. I think it's made into a more big deal it then actually was. I think ABC is more upset about Adam breaking the rules then what he did in the performance. I wasn't crazy about the song and to be honest, that's what I remember about the performance, that I didn't like the song.
Sure what Adam Lambert did was inapropriate but geez. I didn't like it either but other people have done worse. Michael Jackson used to grab his crotch on stage. Ozzy Osbourn bit a bat's head off (which he didn't know it was a real bat) His fans threw animal parts on stage at him. Elvis wiggeled his hips around. What Elvis did with his hips was inappropriate at that time. Does anybody else know any bands from the past who did crazy things? :)
Alice Cooper
Mayhem
Marilyn Manson
Slayer
Motley Crue
WASP
Merciful Fate
King Diamond
The list goes on......
I've seen every one of the afore mentioned bands and they make Adam Lambert look like Seseme Street.
